Deciding on a course of action - How Typewriter Press began

Like so many projects, it all began in March 2020, when the world was locked indoors and the only thing to do was start devoting time to all the things we said we'd do when we had enough time. Suddenly, we all had time to learn French, to do Yoga, to bake bread - and to seriously think about publishing that novel which had been bubbling away on the back burner for quite some time.

Hollie's Dream of Consciousness began life in 2009 as a short story entered into the Bridport prize, where it won a highly commended award from judge Ali Smith. Fast forward to 2016, and it was developed into a novel, the first draft of which was completed in January 2017. After another 3 years during which it underwent several edits and redrafts, it was finally ready to begin sending to literary agents. It was well received, but it was not taken up. Finally, the decision was made to go it alone - and Typewriter Press was born.

Initially, it was bewildering. There were so many helpful articles to read, so many other blog posts - so many people have done this sort of thing - that I began to ask myself was there even room in the world for another self-published novel? However, once the reason became clear for wanting to publish (if just one person I didn't know wanted to buy my book, I'd be happy), it was time to just crack on and do it - and once the decision was made, it was all systems go - and here we are. We're at the beginning of the journey...
